The Ethics Event Judges

 

John F. Cairns

John is Chubb Insurance Company of Canada's Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary and in that role is responsible for managing Chubb Canada’s legal affairs, including legal and regulatory compliance, risk management, corporate litigation and oversight over compliance with the company’s code of business conduct.  After completing his B.A., John attended Queen’s law school, graduating in 1988.  His experience prior to joining Chubb Canada includes insurance defence litigation (both in-house and in private practice) and litigation management.  John speaks frequently at conferences on risk management, corporate governance and ethics.  He sits on the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s Regulatory Affairs Committee and is the Chair of its Regulatory Compliance Working Group.  He is a Chartered Insurance Professional and a member of the Association of Corporate Counsel and the Institute of Corporate Directors.  John lives in Stouffville Ontario with his wife and two children.
   

Janet Keeping

 

Janet Keeping

Janet Keeping is President of the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership.  She has occupied that position since April 1, 2006.

Janet holds a Bachelor of Science in Art and Design from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an M.A. in Philosophy and LL. B. from the University of Calgary.  She was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1982.  She was a founder and first Executive Director of the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre.

From 1992 until 2005 much of Ms. Keeping's professional activity was directed towards legal and regulatory reform in the Russian energy sector.  The topics on which she has worked in Russia include northern resource development, establishment of the rule of law, reform of Russian legal education and the protection of aboriginal interests.

At the Chumir Foundation, Ms. Keeping works primarily on issues connected with human rights, civil liberties, diversity and the strength of our democratic institutions.

   

Stephen Maquire

 

Dr. Stephen Maquire


Stephen Maguire is the founder and Program Coordinator of the Certificate Program in Organizational Values and Ethics at Carleton University.  The Certificate program is designed for ethics officers, senior managers, or those overseeing ethics related portfolios.
Dr. Maguire’s research includes the ethics of organizational control, organizational ethics, organizational values, ethical climate, and ethical behaviour in organizations.  Currently, Dr. Maguire is investigating whether specific organizational programs, policies, and practices have an impact on police officer integrity.
Dr. Maguire has provided ethics consulting services to many public sector organizations including Correctional Services Canada, Canada Public Service Agency, Health Canada, Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Industry Canada, and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Dr. Maguire is happily married, father of a teen age poet, and companion to a standard poodle who enjoys long distance running.
